MEET THE BOARD
2022-2023 SES FSO BOARD
Leah Smith - FSO President

Hello, everyone! My name is Leah Smith. This is my second term as the 1st VP! My husband and I are a blended family with 5 children, and we recently became first time grandparents! The oldest three are my 28-, 27- and 23-year old’s, next in line is my bonus son who is 10 and rounding out the group is our youngest at 8. He is a 3rd grader, and this school year begins our third year as Sunderland Seahawks. I have been serving in the Army for over 12 years, spending the first 6 years on Active Duty and now as a Reservist. Whenever I get a free moment, I spend it hiking around the area, looking for new campsites, reading a new book or traveling as much as possible. I love to meet new people, experience different cultures and see as much of this lovely world as I can.
I grew up in a very small town in Georgia, and when I say very small, I mean it! My high school graduating class consisted of 41 students and we had one traffic light! Now it is a thriving metropolis with two lights! ;) As an adult who has moved around quite a bit, I realized how much I had missed those connections with being part of a community. So here I am, planting some new roots in Calvert County and ready to become a part of our wonderful school family. I am super excited to help build our FSO with all of you! Like our wonderful FSO President, I'm a huge extrovert, so please send me an email or better yet, say hello if you see me. I’d love to meet you! And I'll leave you with this, Go ARMY; BEAT Navy! Go Dawgs!
Feel free to shoot me an email at sesfsofirstvicepresident@gmail.com or text me at 865-228-7798.
Jamie Silva - 1st Vice President
Hello everyone! My name is Jamie Silva, serving my first year as First Vice President. I am so excited to be joining such an amazing organization and I am looking forward to an amazing year here with you all.
I was born and raised in P.G. County and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. Shortly after, I began my career within the medical field. My husband, Steven Silva, and I got married and moved to Lusby in 2007. In 2015 after many years of trying to have children of our own we welcomed twin girls- Aubrey and Makena, and there has never been a dull moment since. They are now almost 8yrs old and 2nd graders here at Sunderland. It was then that I decided to leave the medical field and devote my time to raising our girls and to care for my elderly father-in-law. We purchased a new home in Huntingtown in 2018 and then…..Surprise! A few months later we were blessed and welcomed another baby girl, Stella. She is 4yrs old and just began pre-K at Sunderland. My passion is and will always be my family! I consider Sunderland our school family, so I am here to support the wonderful families, teachers, and staff any way that I can. I am so excited to jump in and make this a memorable year for us all! Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns @ 301-520-7531.

Nikki Steinhauer - Secretary
Hello! My Name is Nikki Steinhauer! This is my second school year at Sunderland and my first year as Secretary of the FSO. I have a Kindergartener, a 2nd grader, and a 5th grader. I was active-duty Air Force for 11years and am currently serving my third year as a Reservist, while attending school full time. My husband is currently active-duty Air Force, which his orders brought us to beautiful Calvert County! So far, we love it here and hope we can extend until retirement from the service. My children have been to many schools due to military moves, and so far, Sunderland has been all our favorite! Coming off the Covid-19 Pandemic, the past few years have been hard for everyone. I hope to make this year’s events spectacular and have a positive impact on the students! Elementary School is all about experiences and I believe that all the students are ready to interact and make lasting memories!
You are always welcome to reach out to me at (856) 979-2806. If you call and I do not answer, text me or leave a voice mail. I am a busy Mama but will get back to you as soon as I can!
Nikki-with 2 Ks 😊

My name is Sara Jo Powell, I’m a proud Iowan transplanted here in Calvert County. I am an Air Force spouse and mother of four children. The Powell children range in ages from 2 years old to 13 years. Connor is 14, in 9th grade, attending Northern High School. Hailey is 12 and in 7th grade at Northern Middle, Elliana is 5 and attends Kindergarten at SES and William just turned three and loves hanging with his mama. As a stay at home mom of four, life is chaotic. Each day brings new rewards and challenges as I navigate being a chef, teacher, advocate for their education, and for our community. However, there's no better feeling than seeing them tucked in sleeping peacefully, knowing they are safe and cared for. Keeping up with my family is a full-time job, one that I'm so fortunate to have!
In addition to being an Air Force spouse, I'm also an Air Force Veteran; having served around the world for eight years. Following my active service I was a government services employee until 2017. I currently have my own “Norwex” business, and I enjoy helping others reduce the chemicals used in our homes to clean.
I will always consider Iowa as home-sweet-home, “Go Hawkeyes!” However, we love living in rural Maryland, which we now consider our forever home. My Iowan upbringing taught me hard work, respect, being resourceful, being kind and how to be a leader.
As a member of the Sunderland FSO, I will strive towards making the very best of any situation while supporting the mission of the organization.
