PRESIDENT

My name is April Corey! I'm a professional photographer, wife of an amazingly tolerant husband, and mother of 4 amazing children ranging in age!  I have a 20 year old son, Gavin, who is in college studying to be a Geologist. He was my practice child - the one I had to figure out how to parent when I had NO EXPERIENCE! (I'm happy to report we made it through it unscathed!)  My daughter Sommer is a junior at Northern High School and is studying hard to fulfill her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She's always been my favorite daughter, and sometimes I'm convinced we share a brain when I see her gravitating to people, or throwing herself "all in" when it comes to helping others! My third child, 2nd grader Xander, is a people-pleaser who'll talk about animals and all things science all day long if you'd let him! He's tuned into making the world a better place and has found a deep love of reading, and the gift of gab that brings us endless "why" questions. Last but not least is Calvin. He is my sports, music, and life-loving Kindergartener, who was coined a "one-man walking party" by my late Grandmother. He's generally a charmer with an unusually deep love affair for all things cats. His kitten, Hobbes, is shown in the photo! Both of my younger children started at SES via the Pre-K3 program. Xander, a 29 week preemie was in the special education program as his lingering preemie delays were able to catch up, and Calvin (amazingly also a 29 week preemie), served as a typical peer. As you can imagine, there's never a dull moment around our house. 

I'm a Calvert County local, who went to Beach Elementary and Northern Middle & High School! I've served as a volunteer soccer coach, a Girl Scout Troop Leader and Welcome Specialist for SU-11/7. In my spare time I can be found raising my hand to volunteer for things, gardening, creating art, DIY projects, cooking and of course pouring my energy into my photography business. One of my goals for the FSO is to get more families involved and continue to bring a greater sense of community to our school! I think we are well on our way, but hopefully we can continue to soar the Seahawk experience!

1ST VICE PRESIDENT

Hello, everyone! My name is Leah Smith. My husband and I are a blended family with 5 children, and we recently became first time grandparents! The oldest three are my 27-, 26- and 22-year old’s, next in line is my bonus son who is 10 and rounding out the group is our youngest at 7. He is a 2nd grader, and this school year begins our second as Sunderland Seahawks. I have been serving in the Army for over 11 years, spending the first 6 years on Active Duty and now as a Reservist. Whenever I get a free moment, I spend it hiking around the area, looking for new campsites, and traveling as often as I can.  I love to meet new people, experience different cultures and see as much of this lovely world as I can. I grew up in a very small town in Georgia, and when I say very small, I mean it. My high school graduating class consisted of 41 students and we had one traffic light! Now it is a thriving metropolis with two lights! ;)  As an adult who has moved around quite a bit, I realized how much I had missed those connections with being part of a community. So here I am, planting some new roots in Calvert County and ready to become a part of our wonderful school family. I am super excited to help build our FSO with all of you!
